Butter that stays soft on the bench, not hard in the fridge

A French butter crock is a very old idea: butter sits in the lid, the lid sits in a little water, and the water seal keeps the air out. Spreadable butter, no fridge, no plastic.

How it actually works

Pour about half an inch of water into the base. Pack softened butter firmly into the lid. Turn the lid over and sit it in the water.

The water forms a seal that keeps air off the butter, so it stays fresh on the bench instead of going hard in the fridge.

Marble keeps its cool

Stone holds a lower temperature than ceramic or plastic, which is exactly what you want sitting out on a counter.

Keep it somewhere cool and out of direct sun and the butter stays spreadable.
