Why this one holds their attention
Most dig kits are a single brick of plaster. This is nine separate excavations, each a different planet, each hiding a different stone. It becomes nine sittings rather than one, and there is a reason to come back to it tomorrow.

How it works
- Pick a planet. Nine sit in the tray, each labelled.
- Chip and brush. The chisel breaks the surface, the brush clears the dust. Slow work, which is the point.
- Find the gem. Read the matching cards — one about the planet, one about the stone.
- Wear it. Thread it on a cord, or set it in the cage pendant.

Worth knowing
- It makes a mess. That is the nature of excavation. Work over a tray or newspaper, ideally outside or at a wipeable table.
- Ages 6 and over. Contains small parts and small stones, so not for younger children.
- Give it time. Nine planets is several sittings, not one afternoon. Rushing a planet usually means a chipped gem.
Who it suits
The child who asks how things work, likes space, or collects rocks and shells. It lands well as a birthday or Christmas gift because it is not over in ten minutes, and because what comes out of it is something they keep wearing.

Are the gemstones real?
Yes — genuine polished stones, including amethyst, topaz, quartz, opal and agate. Not plastic imitations.
How long does the whole kit take?
Each planet is a sitting of its own, so most children spread the nine across a week or two rather than doing them all at once.
How messy is it really?
Messy. There is fine dust. Put down newspaper or work outdoors, and it is easily swept up.
Is it suitable for a 6 year old on their own?
A six or seven year old will want help with the first planet and the jewellery findings. By eight they will manage the whole thing themselves.
Can the jewellery actually be worn?
Yes. The cords and the cage pendant are made for it, and the stones are the right size for a child's necklace or bracelet.
Is it a good gift for a tween?
It suits the upper end of the range particularly well — older children get more out of the jewellery side and the gem facts than the digging alone.
